Aaron Finch, the former captain of Australia, has expressed admiration for Virat Kohli's selfless leadership during his tenure as India's Test captain. Finch noted that Kohli frequently made choices that prioritized the team's success over his personal achievements.
He acknowledged Kohli's ability to handle challenging conditions at home while consistently placing the team's needs above his own throughout his leadership in Test cricket.
Having recently retired from Test cricket, Kohli leaves behind a remarkable legacy. Under his captaincy, India participated in 68 Test matches, securing victory in 40, which is the highest number of wins for any Indian captain.
Kohli's home record was particularly impressive, with 24 wins out of 31 matches. However, Finch emphasized that Kohli's greatness transcends mere statistics, highlighting his strategic decisions and readiness to play in less favorable batting conditions.
Finch Highlights Kohli's Tactical Decisions
"What really stands out to me about Virat's leadership is that you can look at his numbers now and say they're not as good as they were five years ago. But he was playing on some wickets in India that were spinning hugely from day one. It was about putting your own ego aside to say, 'What's the best thing for my team right now to win a Test match against this opposition?'" Finch remarked during a discussion on JioStar while watching the IPL 2025 match between RCB and KKR.
Finch elaborated on how Kohli, despite having the option to request batting-friendly pitches to enhance his statistics, consistently prioritized the team's performance. Kohli's leadership coincided with the emergence of a world-class pace attack for India, and his endorsement of result-oriented pitches played a crucial role in shaping the team's identity both domestically and internationally.
Support from Ravi Shastri
"They could have rolled out some flat wickets and said, 'I'm going to cash in on my own runs and make sure that my record stacks up with some of the all-time greats,' but he put his own ego aside and said, 'I want what's best for my team to win this match,'" Finch added.
Finch's insights were echoed by former India coach Ravi Shastri, who remarked,
"Brilliant point, and it sounds better when it comes from you rather than me."
Kohli concluded his Test career with a total of 9,230 runs at an average of 49.29, ranking fourth among India's all-time leading run-scorers in the format. Although his statistics may have declined in recent years, his influence on the game remained significant.
Kohli's Continued Leadership
Even after stepping down from captaincy in 2022, Kohli maintained a strong presence on the field. In his final Test match earlier this year in Sydney, he was actively involved in setting field placements and boosting team morale in the absence of key players like Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah.
